I just sat down to write this and realized that today (April 28th) is six months to the day that Stuart Little left us.

We adopted Stuart Little on July 30, 2018, a very hot day. I remember him watching us from his cage, with his mom in the next cage, looking like his twin. They both were white with pink eyes, a lovely combination, I think. (His hair was always neat and perfect, and also iridescent, even more when the sun would shine on him.) The woman at the rescue told us he was a very fastidious boy and would always set aside one area of his cage to be messy, while the rest stayed clean.

When the woman from the rescue picked him and his mom up at a wildlife refuge, he was in a Bojangles box, which gave him his original name, Mr. Bojangles. However, oddly enough, a friend of mine had just adopted a cat with the same name, so I thought it best to name him something else. One night he glanced up at me and looked just like the famous Stuart Little, and I knew what to call him.

Stuart Little and Nugget got along right away, except for a bit of teeth chattering at first. After that, they were inseparable, often just inches apart. They loved floortime together, and sometimes Stuart Little preferred to be transported to the floor while still in his cozy. He liked his sofa, too (a different sofa than the one we have now), and one morning I found him under it, resting. He ate his breakfast there, completely hidden.

Stuart Little also enjoyed traveling and attended Carol and Avalanche's virtual Halloween party in 2018. He had fun wearing the boots and hat he bought!

Only a year after we'd adopted him, he began to have some sort of trouble we never could quite define or cure, despite numerous trips to the vet and many inventive ways of preparing his food and trying to help him eat. We had to help him to the Rainbow Bridge just fifteen months after he came to live with us, much too short a time to know him.

Stuart Little, I always tried to call you by both names, but sometimes I just said "Stuart." Now I find myself calling Scottie "Stuart." I guess that is the best tribute I could give you, continuing to speak your name.

We will always love you.

Sadly,
Cindy and Nugget, missing Stuart Little
