Hi everyone
I have a health problem with one of my guinea pigs. I have done some internet research including reading about common GP ailments on Peter Gurney's website but I don't think that I have come across something that fits the description of my GP's symptoms. I have a female piggy, 'Princess', she is roughly about 5 months old, eats well, lives by herself in a plastic GP cage on my balcony of my unit. I use towels for her bedding and this gets changed almost every day as does her water and dry food. I also bathed her a few weeks ago but I use the same shampoo on her that I do with my other 2 male guinea pigs and they are healthy as.
I noticed about 2 weeks ago that her nose was bleeding and she had lost fur on it - as if she had bumped it and scraped it. I had a toy dangling from the top of her cage - plastic bird toy with a bell on the end - and thought maybe at night while running around she's bumped into it so I removed it immediately. However the fur loss spread up her nose and she had little dry specks of blood on her skin. Her skin on the nose also seemed slightly dry. I read on Peter Gurney's website that lavender oil helps to stop bleeding so I applied lavender oil to her nose. The bleeding stopped and all scabs have completely healed and I have noticed that her fur is slowly starting to grow back. Just when I thought she was on the road to recovery I noticed last night that one of her ears has gone all dry and there are dry specks of blood on the inside of her ear now. The rest of her coat is fine. She doesn't show any signs of mites or parasites. I have no idea what to do for my poor little girl. Does anybody have any ideas? Is there something I am doing wrong?
Worried Mum
Kelly
