I've never tried it myself, but I had a vet once tell me that using shredded 
newspaper as bedding would be fine. It's my understanding that the bedding I 
use, called Carefresh, is made from newspaper material, so it made sense to 
me...
If you buy a small household shredder (here in the U.S. they are very 
inexpensive), it would take only a minute or two to shred a newspaper...
