You need to keep your guinea pigs in a safe, shaded area if you want to 
keep them
outside.  There are websites out there that show you how to build these arch
type cages that have mesh netting on the sides and they have the roaming of
the whole thing with their feet on the grass.  They are beautiful.... a 
friend's
son built one for his piggies and they do quite well outside.  Sorry to hear
of your loss.
