Marg,
it takes a while to get used to nail clipping, for you and Nero. If his nails 
are clear it is easier to clip, you want to clip right up to  the quick ( 
pink ending). If his nails are black it is a little trickier. You want to cut 
them approximately to where the nail begins to curve. Try baby clippers. They 
work great for us. Half an inch means his nails are very long. There is always 
the possibility that the nail will curve when they are that long. It must be 
uncomfortable for a guinea pig. If he makes a fuss try holding him with one hand 
on a table and cut with the other. I would not put him on his back because I 
think that that really freaks piggies out.
