Hi,
I just wanted to let you know I have a little hammie with a similar problem, although she has no idea she has a problem at all! Little Sami Hammie had been tossed aside as a reject by a petstore who thought she was unsellable because she was missing a back leg. Luckily a friend of mine saw her before it was too late, and bought her, although this friend could not keep a hamster where she lived. So I adopted sweet Sami and she is a friendly, happy little furball who never lets having only 3 legs slow her down. I have had her for close to a year now--she has gained weight, loves to play, and seems totally healthy. I do notice sometimes her little stump looks a little reddened after she has been playing a lot but she never seems to be in any pain. She does not have a wheel in her cage --we have a ball on a stand that we let her play in for a little while at a time so she doesnt play continually and possibly irritate her stump. So if your little one should have any problems you might want to consider doing that and letting him play for a while daily instead of all the time. You can also use a soft bedding like Carefresh to so he has something soft next to his skin.
Anyway, just had to share this with you! Best of luck with your little hammie and bless you for giving him a second chance!
Leila
