I have been freezing all Bert's food to keep it fresh for
him since he is an only "child" but this would kill any
lice or bugs of any kind that might be in the hay.
It also keeps the vitamins in better and keeps it fresher.
I keep his pellets in the fridge in an air tight container
when the bag is opened so they won"t be too cold but he
really seems jazzed by the cold feed, he always runs over
to his dish or hay rack and starts eating when I fill it.
If you are buying hay in a large bale or bag, you might try
freezing some for a week or so before you feed it, just rotate
it in to the freezer in a large freezer bag long enough to
kill any thing that might be living in it.
