Alanna,
It sounds like your Zippy may have bladder
sludge. Bladder sludge is excess calcium
deposits that are excreted with the urine.
What veggies are you giving Zippy? You might
want to cut back on high-calcium veggies
like parsley or cilantro and also encourage
your little girl to drink lots of water.
Water intake is Very important and the
recommended consumption amount is 1 ounce
of water per pound (lb) of weight. In other
words, if Zippy weighs 2 lbs, then she should
consume at least 2 ounces of water daily.

Also, listen to her when she urinates. If
she is straining and/or whining/crying when
she pee's, then there's a problem. Essentially,
you don't want the sludge to form into bladder
stones. Ask your Vet to do a Urinalysis b/c
they can verify whether or not there is an
infection and/or calcium crystals and/or
blood in the urine. If your Vet doesn't know
how to do that, then no offense, but find a
new Vet. Also, you could request x-rays to
check for bladder stones, but I would start
off first with the urinalysis and then go
from there.

Unfortunately, my Brownie Bear suffers with
bladder sludge and has had bladder stones
removed (back in December 2003). I have been
able to keep her stone-free so far and she
gets x-rays done every 3 months to check for
stones. She had been doing well (except for
one UTI back in December 2004) so far. Well,
and then at the end of March, her x-rays
showed that she had some bladder sludge
build-up in her urine. So, I have been syringing
her extra water almost every day and giving
her Shilingtong (Chinese herb). But, she is
still whining a bit when she pee's. I usually
can flush out the sludge in 2 days flat, but
this time, the sludge seems to be stubborn.
I will keep trying to flush it out and I may
take her back to the Vet sooner than 3 months
because I hate the thought of my baby getting
another stone.

Wow, this was long. Sorry 'bout that. Email
me directly if you have any questions. And
give Zippy some Piggie Hugs 'n Kisses for
me.

      Love 'n Wheeeeeeeeeeeps,
        Leah...Slave to Brownie Bear
                     & Butterscotch :-)

"...Here's my question - lately Zippy has had white
pee; not all the time but sometimes there are white,
chalky, chunks in her cage and the only place they
can come from is her. Has anyone else had this
problem, any suggestions. We just went to the vet
for a check up and Zippy is a healthy piggy except
for this new problem. Alanna and Zippy
