If someone can get the two older boars from Worcester MA to Durham CT I
can take them and they will go immediately to a permanent home. I have
someone that is looking for a senior pair. The two senior pairs that
are in my rescue are both receiving medical care right now so I can't
release them.
Thanks

Hi all!

Since we all hear about surgeries and other "big" things I thought I
would
chime in with a little bit of good news. My pigs went for their
wellness
check on Friday and each receive a clean bill of piggie health! The vet
also said she thought they were well taken care of. It's always good to
hear that, isn't it?

I will be taking Sam in to have him "fixed" although I don't have it
scheduled yet. That was another reason for taking them in. I wanted to
make sure he was healthy enough for surgery.

I must say, they didn't care for the experience, but I spent so much
time
(after the exam) talking to the vet about surgery that Rosie curled up
on
the exam table next to my belly and Sam come up to her forming a 'T' and
laid his head on her. I've never seen them do that before. It was like
he was telling her it was ok and he would protect her! How cute!

That's all for now.
Love and piggie kisses to all!
Maren, Sam, and Rosie

You are one mighty lucky piggy to have such great slaves! Make sure you
give them extra piggy kisses as I'm sure they will give you extra slave
kisses!

Have a great day!

Carla,
I'm Sorry I haven't written ya
sooner, but I wanted you to know
that wheeee have been Praying
for your Snowball. I was worried
when I read your message that he
was getting two of his teefies
removed. And then, I was Happy
to hear that he ate something on
his own this wheeeeekend. And
now, I'm worried again since he
wasn't eating as well yesterday.

Please know that wheeeeee will
be Praying extra hard tonight,
in hopes that your Lil' Snowball
will be Okay and start eating on
his own again. And I totally
agree that TLC does wonders for
our babies. I think that a pig
who knows he's Loved will try
that much harder to get better.

Wheeeee LOVE You, Snowball!!!

 Love 'n Wheeeeeeeeeps,
    Brownie Bear, Butterscotch,

Hello Slaves!
Oh, I wish I could take credit for
the formula below, but I can't. That
formula is actually what Janelle gives
her stone piggies. I've never used
the Cosequin For Cats.

Right now, I give Brownie Bear
3 drops of Metacam per day (when
she's in pain).

Also, I have Shilintong, Flexigan,
Lasix, Mylicon, Benebac, and Baytril.
Obviously, she doesn't get all of
these meds (or herbs) every day, but
wheeee have 'em if she needs 'em.

Such a High Maintainance Pig, I must
say...Wheeeeeek!

   Love 'n Wheeeeeeeeeps,
     Leah...Slave to Brownie Bear
                & Butterscotch :-)
*******************************************************
"...Here's something I copied off here a while back
(I think Leah does this?) for stone piggies: For
piggies with bladder stones this combo seems to
shrink the bladder stones in some cases. Has been
proven to work in shrinking or completely
dissolving stones to avoid surgeries.

1. Two Shilintong tablets
2. Ten drops of Metacam
3. One-half capsule of Cosequin For Cats
I think it's the cosequin (?) that helps the lining
of the bladder be less inflamed so they can pass the
pieces of stone better? I don't remember exactly,
Leah will know I'm sure! =)"

Thanks Jaime,
I think I have the same information copied somewhere, but I couldn't
find it. I
appreciate your advice. My husband and I are currently in the process
of moving,
but we will get Bob in for an xray as soon as we find our new vet. It
couldn't
hurt to see if the stone has changed, and any positive changes will
make us feel
beter.

Carla,
We are currently feeding Bob Bob critical care twice daily, once before
his
breakfast of fresh food and new pellets and once right before we go to
bed. We
fed him more often when he wasn't eating the rest of his food. Our vet
had
suggested every 2-3 hours if he wouldn't eat anything else, or at least
4 times
daily when we were scheduling it around work. His need for it seems to
vary a
bit from time to time, but Bob Bob usually eats 6-8 cc directly from a
syringe.
It was a challenge at first, but now he gobbles the critical care right
from the
tip of the syringe without any trouble. We did have to force him a bit
at first
until he learned how to eat it. My Piggies greatly prefer the
apple/banana to
the anise flavor. We have found that if we make the critical care mix a
little
more juicy than the instructions call for, it comes out of the syringe
easier
and Bob Bob has an easier time swallowing it. You just have to
experiment with
it. The most important thing with Bob Bob's appetite was to
consistantly offer
it to him and, eventually, let him decide how much he needed. Let me
know if you
have any more questions. I'd be happy to offer any suggestions I can to
help you
with Snickers.

I'm the slave that Leah was talking about. I give those 3 meds to 2 of
my
female piggies everyday. My Vet said that Metacam can be given in
higher
doses to "rodents" than to cats and dogs.

She also has them on Cosequin For Cats to reduce the thickness of their
bladder walls. Their bladder walls are still twice as thick as normal.
 But
they were 3 times as thick as normal. They both still cry when she
presses
on their bladders. But she said that the Cosequin For Cats had made a
big
difference. But they both REALLY hate the taste!! And it has a very
strong
tuna & chicken smell!!

And I cannot say enough good things about Shilintong......it has made a
HUGE
difference in their lives and kept them from having bladder stone
surgery.
It has actually shrank the stones. But since I don't know what type of
bladder stones they had, I can't say it will work for all gp's.

Jaime, thanks so much for asking about Rugi. It's funny you should
ask! I just
returned from the vet. I don't have her urine results back yet, but
I'd
actually be surprised if her UTI isn't cleared up. My vet did a
followup x-ray
and her bladder looks dramatically improved. There is a tiny area that
could be
some remaining sludge or just her bladder wall, but compared to the
previous
x-ray where there was definitely a visible area of sludge - that's
gone! I am
definitely a believer in shilintong!

Regarding Rugi's abnormal breathing, the vet says her lungs appear
fibrous. She
explained that they appear to have lost some of their elasticity which
is why
she breathes heavier than Sierra. There is nothing that can be done,
but she
didn't seem overly concerned about this. Has anyone ever encountered
this in
their piggies? Rugi is only 4 years old and has had the care of
royalty!

She also had a sebacous cyst cleaned -- was that ever intriguing! It
was
actually rather nasty, but I'm sure Rugi will appreciate having that
big blob
off her leg now!

So, I'm very pleased at the positive progress that Rugi is making.

I was very disappointed with Sierra's outcome, however. Sierra is a
Satin
guinea diagnosed with an inability to metabolize calcium in March. She
was
hopping and had difficulty moving in the hind quarters and x-ray
revealed her
bones were moth-eaten. We began Ca supplementation and clinically,
she'd
improved so dramatically that I truly expected to see that her bones
had filled
in. Unfortunately, that is not the case so I'm quite depressed right
now.
However, on the positive, clinically speaking she has improved. She is
active
and not limping so my vet suggested to continue supplementation as I
have
because the positive is that there is absolutely no sludge in her
bladder (that
was my worry). So I'll keep up the TLC and prayers. She's been a
miracle for
six months so I'll pray that the miracle continues!

Whew! Aren't you sorry you asked? Sorry for the book -- that's my
update for
today!

Wheeks of health and well wishes to your piggies and all of the other
gpdd's
piggies!

JoAnn, Rugi & Sierra

HI to all our piggie friends and slaves;

It is with a very heavy heart that we must tell you that our newest
friend
Rolex has crossed over the rainbow bridge. He only lived with us a
week, but
our slave and her family were very attached already. Rolex came to our
 herd
very young. We were told he was about a month old, but our slaves
thought
that he was probably younger, and needed his Mommy longer. He was a
cuddlely
friend . He was also a whiz on the computer, putting the rest of us
to shame!
Mommy slave stayed with him until he passed, he was having seizures,
and
having a tough time staying with us. We felt blessed that we did not
have to
take him to the Vet to be put to sleep. I am sure he is pop corning
and
meeting new friends at the Bridge. He is buried with our friend Jynx
the cat in

the backyard. Our friend Rocket still needs a cage mate, so mommy
slave
will be looking for a new friend for us soon. For now, Rolex will be
forever
etched in our hearts. Gone too soon.

Sadly, Karen:( Slave to Rex, Rajah, Rocket and Rolex in our hearts

Hi Carla,

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that Snowball will make a full
recovery! Please let us know how he's doing and I will keep him in my
prayers.
As a comment, I used to give my little girl some critical care and it
only
took a couple of cc's to get her wanting to eat again so maybe Snowball
needs a little kickstart to help the appetite.

Hello Everyone and Everypig -

I know this has come up recently, but as usual, I was out to lunch, so
to speak,
and I missed it.

That naughty Carmen has been chewing on the coroplast "box" of the cage.

What are some of the interventions y'all have tried to prevent piglets
from
chewing up their home?!?!???

Thanks in advance.

Martha,
I use towels as bedding for my piggies
and I wrote about it a while back, so
this is what I wrote:

"...I keep my spoiled rotten piggies on towels
and I Love it! In their 4x2 C&C cage, I use
those big, oversized towels. I put down
6 layers of towels and I change the top 2
layers every 12 hours. I completely change
all 6 layers once a wheeeeek. Since they
are free-range, I also keep towels under
the dining room table, in their tents,
Cuddle Cups, and I have a sheet of coroplast
under our bed with 3 layers of towels on it
for Butterscotch (he sleeps under our bed at
night). Oh, and if you're wondering why I
keep the coroplast under there, it's because
wheee have a King size and I'm getting too
old to be crawling under beds--ha ha! So, I
just pull the coroplast sheet out and change
the top layer of towels once a day and I do
a full change once a wheeeeek.

Needless to say, in our household, wheeeeee
do a ton of towel laundry! ha ha! I buy
an environment-friendly liquid laundry
detergent called 'Seventh Generation' and
wash their towels in that. It's $Expensive$,
but the cheapest place I could find it is
Drugstore.com.

The only downside is that it's a lot of
work. In the morning, it takes me about
30 minutes to change the towels, feed 'em,
etc. At night, I spend about 1 hour changing
the towels, shaking out the hay, refilling
the water bottles, etc. And the whole time,
Brownie Bear is watching me--making sure
I'm doing it Right. And that Butterscotch
will be running around in between me and the
cage being silly and telling me to 'Hurry Up!'
ha ha"

    Love 'n Wheeeeeeeeeeeps,
      Leah...Slave to Brownie Bear &
                        Butterscotch :-)

*******************************************************
"...So since the herd has expanded my husband, who
enjoys them just as much, has built them a new 6 x
3 1/2 palace. As the size is a bit daunting for
bedding
I am shifting to the towel method. I'd love to hear
from other that also bed their piggies with towels
and find out their routine, how many they use etc.
Please feel free to contact me through the digest or
directly at marthac at cogeco.ca..."

They are older - approximately 4 and 5 yrs. each. Scooby is an
American.
Scrappy has long hair. Their family has only until Oct. 1 to find them
another
home.

Is there anyone in Central Mass. who could provide temporary foster
care?
