As I was heading up the stairs to go to bed last night, I heard what can
only be described as mayhem in the pig pen. Tribble (my 5 year old sow, who
is definitely the alpha pig) was chasing the neutered boar Zathras around
the pen. They were running in circles around the pigloo in which Leela was
wisely hiding. I put my hand between them and they stopped as long as The
Hand was there. When I removed it, there was teeth chattering and chasing
again.

A few days ago, I saw Tribble trying to mount Leela. Tribble and Leela are
usually best buddies. Wherever Tribble goes during floor time, Leela is
usually right on her heels. It's not unusual for Z to be the odd man out.
(Poor thing is the only man in the house. He needs a little remote control
and a beer.)

I guess Tribble is feeling the need to firm up the pecking order. Someone
must have challenged her. Of course, she looked at me with those big, black
eyes as if to say "Me? I'm innocent of whatever it is."

Never ceasing to be amazed and amused by my fur babies,
Jan

Hi Pam, I hope Amos is doing better. That symptom strikes alarm bells with
me: my guinea pig Snickers had his liver levels elevated. He was at the
vet's to have a tumor removed. I don't think he had any Bactrim however.
They did a blood test prior to the surgery, so it was before any drugs were
administered.

My vet had me get some liquid milk thistle at a natural foods store for
Snickers, so I agree with Antoinette and Susi that it is a good thing to do.
It was two years ago and I don't recall how much she advised giving him.
Unfortunately everything we did for my little Snickers was to no avail.

So I really would watch Amos very carefully. If the liver shuts down all the
other organs shut down too and I understand it is very painful. If anyone
else knows why a guinea pig might show elevated liver enzymes I would be
interested to know possible causes. My vet didn't know for sure.

Also Snickers was having trouble eating, like Amos, and there may have been
a relation between the appetite and the liver function. So that would lead
me to think it was not the Bactrim in Amos's case. I hope this was more
helpful than depressing.

Carla, with Snowball and Apache, remembering our beautiful Snickers at the
bridge
