Hi Slaves,

Have been away for a holiday and just catching up. Read the post on
problems with eating after tooth trimming. When the spurs grow on back
teeth they sometimes trap the tongue causing tissue damage. Daktarin
oral gel and Bonjela ( here in Uk ) are recommended to sooth sore areas
and help with healing. It is always best to get the guinea pig back
onto a diet rich in coarse fibre as soon as possible.

I have been trying to find an article I read somewhere that in some
guinea pigs where the molars are so overgrown the jaw is forced into a
slightly open position. In some cases the occlusion or bite is so
affected it never returns to normal after dental treatment. When I find
this reference I will post it. If the molars at the back can't meet to
grind food then this could explain the subsequent regrowth of spurs.

My husband is a dental surgeon and he agrees that is may very well be
the case.

Are there slaves out there who never have any, or whose pigs suffer
rarely with tooth problems? Could they post what their guinea pigs diet
is? Maybe this way we could compare what we all feed our pigs and see
if there is a connection.

Condolences to all who have lost pigs over the past two weeks.
Especially Penny. I was thinking about Guinness while I was away. We
have a lovely black and white boar of the same name. I thought it might
be good news Penny but sadly it was not to be. I hope the Piggyfriends
( and you ) are coping with your loss.

Best Wishes to all slaves and their pigs.

Antoinette.
