Hi Janneke.  Pumpkins of any size and color can be eaten by people and pigs alike.  What you'll find is that the large, orange pumpkin in the States is call a Jack-O'-Lantern and usually carved at Halloween.  The flesh itself is somewhat bland.  The small "sugar" pumpkin is the one used here for baking.
