Sorry I haven't gotten an update posted on Mimi until now. I've been busy with the holidays & taking care of her & Holli our foster piggie. My regular vet wasn't in on Monday so we went to see another vet there who sees guinea pigs. She was very nice, gentle, seemed to me to have a good knowledge of piggies. I know she helped the Humane League in some of their piggie abuse cases last year. She is pretty young, but I felt good about her. She wanted to check Mimi's teeth, but Mimi had a mouth full of food, so she gave her little sips from a syringe of water to help her clean out her mouth. Then she checked her front teeth, which are fine, & then checked each molar, (giving Mimi time to calm down in between each!). She said the one molar on the right side (can't remember if it's the top or bottom) is a little longer then the molar on the left. She said it is not overlapping the other teeth or poking anything in her mouth, but it is something to keep an eye on for the future. She did a complete head to toe exam & the only problem was when she got to Mimi's lower belly area, down around her back legs, Mimi seemed to find that painful. So the vet did x-rays & said her heart & lungs look great. There is no stones or sludge or blockages. She did have some gas. She thought maybe it could be stress? I explained that Holli has been here 3 weeks & Mimi's problems only started last weekend, so I can't imagine what she could be stressed about. I had a thought about food. I got some veggies from the salad bar a few days before Mimi started acting sick. I wanted to offer a variety to Holli to make sure she is getting enough vit.c & stuff in case she's pregnant. Anyway, my mom said they put stuff on the veggies in salad bars. Some kind of preservatives to keep them fresh. I wondered if that could have upset her belly, but I fed Holli the same stuff & she is fine. So the vet sent her home with a motility med called Propulsid & a painkiller called Buprenex. She was supposed to receive the Propulsid every 8 hours for 4 days & I gave her the last dose at 5:00 this morning, so I guess now we see how she does without it. I only gave her the painkiller twice. It made her dopey! She hasn't seemed to have pain anymore, so I have withheld it. I have been feeding her Critical Care 3-4 times a day. She likes when I spread it out on a paper plate & she eats it right off that! Then she chews on the plate. That's how I know she's done! She has been eating her hay, pellets & veggies decently on her own. Not as much as I would like, but at least she's eating. She is holding steady at 2 pounds, 1 ounce. I have been weighing her every day. The vet said if she doesn't improve, the next step would be to do blood work. Another thing that I noticed was the night before I took her to the vet she was doing this trembling, vibrating like thing. It's hard to describe. She also did it while she was at the vets & then it seemed to go away. Then yesterday morning I noticed she was doing it again. Then she was fine the other times I held her yesterday. It's really weird. Anyway, sorry this is so incredibly long. I want to thank everyone for their quick support & care for Mimi. Sorry it took me so long to update everyone. Please keep her in your prayers. Thanks.
