Vedra Stanley-Spatcher of BAR recommends a 3 week diet before a cavy is
tested for blood or urine glucose. The diet consists of only hay, rolled
or crushed oats, cabbage and water. Nothing Else must be given during
this test period. Blood glucose can be tested using a human hand held
glucose meter or by over clipping a nail. Normal blood glucose for a
cavy is 60-125 mg/dl though this range may vary between laboratories. If
diet alone does not control the glucose level, Vedra recommends to first
try Tolbutamide before using insulin lente.
