Hi Lisa-
Yes, as Craig said, no one meant any hard feelings at all. One thing about
this group, if you ask a question, be prepared for an answer! As with the
better known over-population problem of cats and dogs, apparently raising
guinea pigs can be risky - to the piggies.
Of course, you live in a totally different locale from most of us, so you
would
know best about the situation there. So maybe proceed with extreme caution,
do your homework and be as careful as possible about where the babies go.
Maybe you could establish a sort of cross between just raising piggies to
provide to the public, and the support and education that some of these
rescues provide. That would be providing at least a couple of very valuable
services - making sure the piggies are properly cared for and have a
support system, as well as introducing the magic of guinea pigs to deserving
people. Just keep in mind the many terrible stories of what happens to
so many little piggies; maybe it's not that way there, but it could easily
get
that way if people like you and the other breeders aren't cautious.
So hang in there, keep asking the questions you need to (I have an idea
you will still get lots of supportive replies) and let us know how it goes.
In
addition, there are lots of other resources out there, most of which the
folks
here on the digest can recommend to you. Like Peter Gurney! (Just don't
believe what you read on that other website mentioned here earlier, in
Calif., where they were giving mis-information! Maybe they've had enough
reaction from us they've corrected it or shut down!)
Also, while looking for some hay resources in Australia for another new
member,
I happened across several great websites for Aus. and N Zealand. Apparently
there are quite a few gp owners there that can probably help. One website in
particular had some good information.
As Craig said, we're all pig-lovers.
