Hi Michelle,
You and several others have written excellent letters on this
unpleasant topic.
You mention our lack of traditions (on the whole) that honor and
respect food animals. I think we all need to look into ourselves and simply become
more aware, more conscious, of the value of all life. If we cannot manage to
become vegetarians, perhaps we can at least be moderate in our use of
animals-as-food. Simple increased consciousness can mean a great deal in altering our
habits.
Perhaps we need to take note, too, of animal food items being
carelessly tossed out because of such things as being left in the refrigerator too
long or because of "freezer burn." The casualness, the lack of realization of
what we're actually doing, contributes to this overall national attitude of waste
being ok. (Shame on us!)
By the way, I'm not advocating eating spoiled meat. Or of eating or
not eating meat. Some of us just need to be a bit more aware of our shopping,
storage and eating habits. Perhaps we can contribute to slowing down the great
commercialized animals-as-food conveyor belt.

Alge (and the Jolly Rodents who, however, are wheeeking away in there about
organizing a protest of some kind.)
