Dear GPDD family,
Cavies need to be treated with both ivermectin and panacur to cover the
entire internal and blood sucking external parasites.
Below is the protocol that the Cambridge Cavy Trust uses. There are
always exceptions to the case.
1.0% Ivermectin for injection. This can be brought at any feed store
also many pet stores sell it online. You do not need an Rx. You will be
giving this medication orally and will need a 1.0 ml syringe.
2.5% Panacur suspension. You can buy this online from PCP Direct no need
for Rx. You will need another 1.0 ml syringe.

This is a UK pharmacy. I think they take Paypal but you would have to
contact them first and ask. They do take US credit cards. However you
may have to contact your credit card company and tell them that you are
going to make an online charge to PCP direct. The reason for this is
because many credit card companies will think that the change is
fraudulent if you do not often place charges to the UK. Also PCP Direct
will contact you regarding the shipping cost and the total price. They
have the best prices and very reasonable shipping and you usually get
your order in a week. You can use 2.5% Valbazen instead of 2.5% Panacur.
Worming protocol starting at 3 months of age. Unless you are having a
problem with your cavy such as loosing weight, diarrhea or cow patty
type feces this is the general worming protocol.
Ivermectin 1.0% give 0.1 ml orally. Repeat in 10 days.
Panacur 2.5% give 0.4 ml orally. Repeat in 10 days.
Every 3 months for the rest of the life of the cavy give one dose of
Ivermectin 0.1 ml and two doses of Panacur 0.4 ml, the second dose 10
days apart from the first dose.
If you have a cavy that is suffering from undiagnosed weight loss,
diarrhea or soft squishy feces then you would give the Ivermectin 2
doses 10 days apart. However give 0.4 ml of the Panacur for 5 days in a row.
Never giver ivermectin to a pregnant sow. All cases of diarrhea must
also be treated with Imodium. Use children's Imodium 0.8 ml a second
dose can be repeated in 8 hours. You do not want to give more than 2 mg
of Imodium/day and keep duration of treatment to a minimum. Make sure to
give plenty of fluids such as Pedialyte any flavor not diluted. Remember
a cavy needs a minimum of 40 ml of fluid/day. It is better is they drink
90 ml for water /day.
Cheers,
Ann and the Rescued Piggys of Piggyville, Tampa Florida USA.
