Hi Jami,
Sorry I missed your earlier posts on Mimi. I would not use Metacam.
Research into a safe dose of Metacam for cavies is still on going. I
work at a vet practice that has never used Metacam because of its known
toxicity to the liver and kidneys. I have seen many cavies that have
been given Metacam by other vets and have liver and or kidney failure.
The Cambridge Cavy Trust, CCT, recommends to use childrens ibuprofen 20
mg/ml. The bottle will say 100 mg in 5 ml. The oral dose is 0.2-0.4 ml
twice a day for pain and inflammation. Whenever treating a cavy for UTI
it is imperative to give an anti-inflammatory drug with the antibiotic
for a least a week longer than the time the antibiotic is given. Failure
to use an anti-inflammatory drug in treatment of UTI's often results in
reoccurance of UTI and stone formation because inflammation of the
urinary tract was not addressed. Yes the spur can be her problem and at
5 years of age she is a senior cavy. However the average life expectancy
of a cavy is 7.5 years as established by the CCT who have operated a
cavy hospital for almost 40 years.I am not a vet but I volunteer for Dr.
Frank Bonsack DVM of Adventure Animal Hospital as a cavy health advisor.
Cheers,
Ann and the Rescued Piggys of Piggyville, Tampa Florida USA.
